24th September 2024: His Excellency President Adama Barrow arrived in New York on Monday evening. He attended the opening of the 79th Ordinary Session of the United Nations General Assembly- UNGA 79 on Tuesday, 24th September2024 in New York.
The opening statements from world leaders called for a more just world order, void of discrimination, unjust biases against the less privileged and vulnerable.
Since the establishment of the UN in the 1940s, the world has undergone drastic changes including the increased number of independent countries, gender representation in public life and the participation of the youthful population with increased interest in good governance and democratisation of public institutions.
Additionally, conflicts and wars leading to the killing of civilians, including women and children in Gaza and elsewhere, warrant the call for world leaders and countries to work together and commit to justice for all.
Furthermore, global developments justify reforms at the UN, ensuring peace and security for all nations and states, remembering women and young people as key stakeholders in peace building and advancement of the world.
To achieve the critical goal of peace for all, world leaders call for cooperation, togetherness and unity against aggression of the powerful over the weak and oppressed.
The Israel war on Palestine was featured in all statements, demanding an end to Israel’s occupation of Palestine and urge for peaceful co-existence within a two-state resolution.
Later, Tuesday afternoon, His Excellency held a bilateral meeting with the President of Mauritius, H. E. Prithviasingh Roopun. The duo discussed issues of mutual interest to their nations and strengthening cooperation.
