State House, Banjul, 7th May 2025: His Excellency President Adama Barrow today received the Special Representative of UN Secretary General, Leonardo Santos Simao at the State House.
The discussions centred on the adoption of a new Constitution for The Gambia as promised by the government.
H.E. Simao encouraged the government to continue engaging in dialogue and consultation with political parties, Civil Society Organisations and the International Community to reach a consensus.
Responding to the issue of a new Constitution, President Barrow said his government reviewed the Draft Constitution 2020 and came out with a 2024 version that incorporates their reviews. He proposed that if other stakeholders have concerns about the 2024 Draft Constitution, his government is open to discussing the specific concerns.
The ongoing discussions demonstrate President Barrow’s commitment to fulfilling his campaign promise for a new Constitution that will provide a clear framework for stability and rule of law in the country. Other issues discussed included the economic, social, peace and security situations of West Africa.
