State House, Banjul, 4th October 2024: President Adama Barrow presented Certificates of appreciation to eighty ECOMIG Officers at the State House, on Friday morning, following the end of their tour of duty.
“When your country chooses you to serve, you have a responsibility to raise your country’s flag.” President Barrow told the team.
He expressed gratitude to Senegal and ECOWAS for supporting The Gambia's democracy by deploying ECOMIG officers. President Barrow thanked them for their peaceful service in The Gambia and wished them blessings and progress in their future endeavours back home.
The President stated that while their mission would come to an end, the relationship with Senegal would continue. He expressed his gratitude to President Diomaye Faye and Senegal for their support of the troops during their duties in The Gambia over two to three years.
In a separate engagement, President Barrow visited the 300-meter road behind the Banjul Market to assess its condition. His government began the Banjul roads, drainage, and sewage project in 2019 to transform Banjul into a city to be proud of. While driving through the road and listening to the complaints of the business people, the Gambian President expressed, "the condition of the road is detrimental to business and tourism, and it poses a health hazard."
Regarding the management and administration of the market, the vendors complained of poor waste management and lack of security.
The President emphasized the importance of upholding the best interest of consumers, vendors, and especially the residents of Banjul. This includes ensuring food safety, and a clean and green environment, among other priorities.
During an impromptu visit to Banjul Market, President Barrow promised vendors improved roads. He tasked Hadim Gai, the contractor of the Banjul Project, to start upgrading the market road to ensure that vendors work in a clean and comfortable environment.
The inspection underscores the Barrow administration's commitment to improving the lives and livelihood of Gambians.
