President Barrow Discusses Cooperation in Migration, Diplomacy, and Elections with Commonwealth SG

State House, Banjul, 29th April 2026: His Excellency, President Adama Barrow, received H.E. Shirley Ayokor Botchwey, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, at State House in Banjul.

The discussion focused on deepening engagement and identifying areas for continued cooperation. Both sides reviewed progress made so far while exploring the way forward. Further discussions include human rights, migration management, and the establishment of a diplomatic academy.

President Barrow assured the delegation of The Gambia's support in steering the Commonwealth in a new direction toward strengthened partnership and cooperation for economic growth. He urged member countries to look inward in doing business, to create wealth through enlightenment, and to creatively finance empowerment programmes for women and young people.

On the TRRC, President Barrow called on the Commonwealth to support the reparations and technical support to maintain confidence in the court system.

The President shared the Government's agenda to build the capacity of Young people and prepare them to take up national responsibilities through investment in education. For wider and inclusive development, amenities are being spread countrywide, with 90% electricity coverage and road expansion already impacting the lives of Gambians.

The Gambia reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that the upcoming Presidential election is free, fair, and transparent, with the support of the Commonwealth.

The Secretary-General reaffirmed the Commonwealth’s unwavering commitment to assisting The Gambia, particularly in building resilience as the country continues its democratic journey.
